Well hello there.

Week 2, #3
Wednesday, July 31, 2013 @ 6:17 AM

In tuesday's class, we were told to research about a designer/artist who broke the rules. Who uses manipulation into its work. I've chosen Leonard C Bailey for my designer. He started the folding bed in 1899, for the soldiers. He was a successful african american inventor and businessman he received a patent for the soldier's bed on july 1899. He started of as a professional barber who owns 3 barber shops in the district of columbia. Other than the soldier's folding bed for tent and camp purposes, he also created a device for automatically shunting moving railway trains, a device for rapidly stamping mail. He was also a director of the industrial building and savings company in d.c, a board member of the berean baptist church in d.c, a director of the Manassas Industrial School for coloured youth, member of the famous "Millie Gaines Jury". He was a leader to many. In all, that we know that he is a very successful person beyond his creations. What he created was indeed, an improvement to our world. Imagine if he hadn't created any of these creations. Take the folding bed for an example? How many of us would have a cramp room because of the limited space we're left once our bed, wadrobes and what not takes up. I guess, if not for his creation, designers in this era wouldn't have been inspired to do double decker beds or sofa beds even. Being the first person to create a product, that still exist up till now, is indeed an honourable thing.

One of the rules he broke was that, people would assume and think that a bed is as it is. Laid flat on the ground, not being able to move much and that it takes up a whole lot of space. But not for his folding bed, as the title says it all. "Folding bed" means a bed that can be folded. It is essential and useful as it helps one to conserve space and that people can be more open to how they can design their room forgetting the amount of space their bed takes up.
